Humble Abode: Update Your Home Sweet Home

I am one of those people that get bored quickly with home decor. I often find inspiration in magazines, from television shows (HGTV is a problem) and on social media.

For a long time I wanted navy blue walls. Navy is actually my favorite color and I find it so sleek. Admittedly, I was worried about how dark it would be but my painter (hey Justin!) convinced me that bringing the blue into the kitchen and as an accent wall would be a perfect balance. I ended up with more of a blueberry versus a true navy but I am so happy where I landed. I added navy drapes, updated my pillows (West Elm) and added a navy throw (Pottery Barn), then it all seemed to come together. I love how it turned out with the natural table and chair accents. I also changed my artwork – I added a gallery wall and my favorite Christopher Uphues “Happy Cry” piece in the hallway – and suddenly it felt like home.

In New York/New Jersey people don’t have the houses that people are used to in the rest of the country. Our places are condos, apartments and sometimes beautiful brownstones and space is often LIMITED. We use every inch. I believe that home is what you make it. It’s important to look at your home as a sanctuary and to make it beautiful no matter where you live. These days it’s so easy (and fun) to make a house a home. Places like Home Goods, Home Sense, Ross and TJ Maxx make it very easy (and inexpensive). As we head into cozy/nesting season, make your home a refuge. It is also important for your mental health and peace of mind. Give your home a mini makeover. New space brings new energy. You won’t regret doing it.
