Another Perfect New York Night

I think this is going to turn into a series for this blog …

We did it again! I don’t know if I have mentioned this before but I have a group of dear friends that plan events throughout the year for us to attend.  The events can be dinner at someone’s home or at a restaurant, something cultural or just something fun happening in the city (or another city). We are thinking of incorporating a volunteer aspect to the outings this summer.  I actually used to do this same sort of thing with a fun group of friends when I had a work assignment for a year in Houston, Texas.  We had such a blast and this group is the same for the most part.

This most recent outing was to go see singer Meshell Ndegeocello at the famous Blue Note Jazz Club in Greenwich Village. Meshell is an amazing artist and I really love that she was the composer for the OWN show, Queen Sugar (which was/is incredible). I’m not as familiar with her most recent album but she has an amazing voice and everyone was really excited to see her at the Blue Note. We were super excited and ended up going to the second show. We got there early so that we would have prime seating selection. We got there and had to wait about an hour in FREEZING cold weather (due to some issues with ticket system) but I won’t dwell on that because we made it through (with some whiskey and by huddling together … and laughing a lot to stay warm during what was the coldest night of the year – yikes!).

Once we got inside and got situated in our seats (and thawed out a bit), ordered food and cocktails, Meshell and her band walked through the crowd and took the stage. They put on an amazing show!!! Meshell’s deep, gravely voice was exceptional and the band of about seven was intoxicating. The show was worth the wait and nothing short of fantastic. There is nothing like live music.  And while the Blue Note is a bit of a fire hazard and the concert was over way too soon, I was so happy that we went. We didn’t stay around for the merch signing event afterwards, we were too busy navigating the cold in these New York streets (headed back to our various neighborhoods) and basking in afterglow of the magic we had just witnessed.
