During the pandemic I watched many YouTube videos about deep conditioning my hair. I was one of those people that went to the hair salon weekly and I left the heavy hair care lifting to the professionals. But once we were on lockdown, I had time to watch videos of other Black women sharing their knowledge about how they kept their hair healthy and lengthy at home. There are so many helpful videos online for every type of Black hair. I went down the rabbit hole watching these gorgeous women school everyone about how to nurture and love our hair. It was amazing to hear about what was working for different women (I still can’t believe we were all locked in the house like that … I kinda miss it a little bit … anyway …). I also realized that the “treatments” I hade been getting at the salon weren’t really up to par. They really don’t have the time to provide the deep conditioning our hair needs from time to time. This deep conditioning requires a large part of a Saturday or Sunday where when we can take our time and sit under that hair dryer for awhile and read a book and relax while loving on our locks. While I enjoyed so many of the videos I came across, the one I still use now is the following (my hair love it) and I wish I could give credit to the lovely woman that shared this information but I didn’t save the link (my bad):
- Add a mixture of protein (I like APHogee Keratin Two Minute Reconstructor) and coconut oil on dry hair; put on a plastic shower cap and sit under the dryer for 15-20 minutes.
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo to wash your hair. I like Keracare. Use a scalp stimulator (it feels amazing). Important: Use a cotton t-shirt to dry your hair for 15 minutes (towels break your hair – do not use them to dry your hair … t-shirts are much more gentle).
- After shampooing your hair, mix coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil with a conditioner (I like Keracare Humecto Creme Conditioner or Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm). This concoction feels amazing on your hair. Put on a plastic shower cap and sit under the hair dryer for 25 minutes.
- Wash out the conditioner with the sulfate-free shampoo.
- Use a leave-in conditioner (I like APHogee Pro-Vitamin Leave-in Conditioner). Sit under the hair dryer.
- Once your hair is dry seal your hair with jojoba oil (I like Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil).
Try this – I think you and your hair will love it.
